The episode featuring Kate Kamau will air on Sunday, 26 February 2023 at 20:00 CAT on E! Africa (DStv channel 124), available on Universal + immediately after.
In Kate Kamau’s episode of E! VIP she opens up on how she joined Mother-in-Law, her breakout role: “I was at my lowest, I felt like my dreams were shattered. Then my cousin got into acting, she was playing Tina on the show. So, I felt like my cousin was living my life, I’m left at home with a baby, and she was living with us. So, one day the phone rings and she asks me to come to where she was filming because there was an extra role that she thought I could play very well. I rushed to the set and I remember I was supposed to dance and that’s it. I danced so hard that I was overpaid! The producer asked, ‘can you act?’ and I tried a script and I was a secretary to Charlie and that’s how Selena grew. I was like this opportunity is not gonna pass me by”.
Kate discusses finding out she was pregnant at 19: “I was in college, 6 months in and the first time away from home from my strict mum. I find myself in a different country, I can talk to boys, I can go to the discos, I can drink. I was overwhelmed. By the second month I had a boyfriend and by six months I was pregnant. I actually didn’t know I was pregnant. The father of my child went out and we had a motorbike accident and had to go to hospital. The doctor came in and said everything is okay, the baby is safe. I was like, ‘what baby?”
She also opens up about whether she ever feels misunderstood by her fans: “Yes. This one time I tweeted about teenage pregnancy, and I was talking about how we can make sure we don’t glorify teenage motherhood. My wording was wrong, but my message was clear and being on the ground speaking to these girls going, ‘oh but Kylie Jenner looks cool with her baby’ and I have to bring them into reality because motherhood changes you, you’re not a billionaire”.
