A Pocket Full of Suspects
For those who may be technically challenged, a pocket dial (or “butt call”) is an accidental phone call placed typically when a phone is jostled while in a back pocket. In the case of Jeff, the call is placed to his wife, and, by all appearances, it sounds as if Jeff has committed a murder.
The strength of the film was in the large number of suspects who possibly murdered Juliette Lane and Meredith Yell. Jeff’s workplace was a highly competitive environment and included some underhanded practices that could implicate Jeff’s supervisor Ellen.
The action focuses on the responses of Jeff’s wife Stacey and how she must come to terms with the mountain of evidence against her husband. Stacey’s sister Joelle Davrou and her husband Alex, as well as Alex’s nephew Sean Puli, also figure in the action. One of the most intriguing characters was Jeff’s formidable mother-in-law Madeline, who has a 180-degree pivot from loathing her son-in-law to testifying at his arraignment, paying his bail, and welcoming him into her home.
Following a melodramatic climactic scene, the denouement seemed awfully abrupt, and it left no hint about an extremely uncomfortable professional position that Jeff must be in with his boss Ellen. It could have also stressed the importance of treating one’s phone like a bodily appendage in order to avoid the pitfalls of a pocket dial.
