Tshabalala, known for his acclaimed literary works – “Melusi’s Everyday Zulu,” “Magenge, we need to Talk,” and “Gogo Magic and Her Magic Food Truck,” has established himself as a prominent literary figure. His books, infused with humour and cultural insights, have resonated with readers of all ages. Once again tapping into his keen sense of insight, Tshabalala recognised the need for a family-and-child-friendly African cuisine restaurant in a market that has often overlooked the African family, and especially the African child.
To bring the concept of food, infused with the magic of Gogo (granny) to life, when Tshabalala launched the first version of the eatery in 2022, he collaborated with his mother Gogo Magic and her sister, Gogo Thoko, the culinary geniuses featured in the book “Gogo Magic and her Magic Food Truck.” Their expertise and love for cooking formed the foundation for the authentic flavours and enchanting dining experience offered at Gogo Magic Family Eatery.
Building upon this foundation, Tshabalala has teamed up with celebrated chefs Tefo Mokgoro and Kholiwe Sinuma, and together, they are committed to elevating the culinary experience at Gogo Magic Family Eatery, ensuring each dish is meticulously crafted to perfection and infused with love and magic.
In addition to the introduction of the upgraded Gogo Magic Family Eatery dining experience, Tshabalala will launch another captivating children’s book, “Gogo and her Magical Mzukulu,” during the grand opening. This book not only serves as the second instalment in the “Gogo Magic” book series but also acts as a follow-up to Tshabalala’s acclaimed work, “Magenge, we need to talk” in that it addresses the challenges and pitfalls that young boys, particularly Black boys, have to navigate on a daily basis.
“It is with great pleasure that I introduce Gogo Magic Family Eatery to the vibrant Johannesburg community,” expressed Melusi Tshabalala. “Through our enchanting children’s books, continued children’s literature activities and delectable cuisine, we celebrate the magic, love, and cultural heritage that African families cherish. Gogo Magic is a heartfelt tribute to the wisdom and warmth of my incredible mother, whose actual name is Magic, and her extraordinary bond with children.”
