Over 2500 delegates from across the world will meet at the Cape Town International Convention Centre for the International Congress on Infectious Diseases in December 2024
Each year, more than three million people around the world lose their lives because of infectious diseases (ID). While the demographic profile of these people varies, the bulk of the burden is felt in low and middle income countries, particularly in the global south, where neglected tropical diseases and under-resourced health systems add to the impact.
The meeting, hosted by the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISI) will run from the 3rd – 6th of December 2024. It will bring together delegates from around the world to discuss, exchange ideas and find solutions to improve human, environmental and veterinary health.
“Our objective is to bring together the diverse stakeholders in infectious diseases and global health to learn from each other and to share cutting-edge research,” said Linda MacKinnon, ISID CEO. “It will be the largest gathering of infectious disease clinicians and scientific professionals on the continent and will cover the whole continuum of healthcare – from data surveillance to patient therapeutics.”
The programme will reflect the One health integrated, unifying approach that balances and optimises the health of people, animals and the environment and helps to prevent, predict, detect and respond to global health threats.
“The Congress affords the close exchange of cutting-edge scientific knowledge and communication between colleagues from around the world. There is something for everyone: from ID physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and microbiologists to veterinarians, policymakers, government officials, and early career researchers in different fields of global health and infectious diseases. The Meet-the-Expert sessions are designed to have attendees updated on the current global best practices in ID. There are opportunities for attendees to present their research and interact with global experts and attendees from all over the world.” Dr Mac Kinnon explained.
