Join us in sharing a powerful true story of resilience and transformation across South Africa.
The acclaimed one-man play, Beggared in SA, is poised to embark on a significant tour, including performances at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, which kicks off on June 30, as well as the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland later this August. To realise this vision, the production team is launching a fundraising campaign to support this tour for SA and Scotland.
A Story That Resonates
Beggared in SA offers a raw and darkly comic portrayal of a white South African man’s journey from privilege to homelessness, ultimately finding unexpected humanity in a township. Performed by the talented Sean Higgs and directed by Gideon de Wet, this true story challenges perceptions and highlights the resilience of the human spirit.
Gideon says: “The premise is based on a true story of a white South African man educated at a good school who was born in the sixties in south Africa. His life of privilege comes to an end one day and he ends up sleeping rough and using a begging board at a traffic light to survive. He moves into a township renting a shack for a small consideration and is at the traffic lights to this day. His racist indoctrination is challenged by the spirit of Ubuntu that exists in the township, and he learns that those with very little in material terms are far more accommodating of his humanity than the so-called privileged society from which he fell from grace.”
