The Chris Seabrooke Music Hall at Wits University sets the stage this winter for two unmissable concerts celebrating South African music at its most inspired and innovative.
In Motion: Led by Vuma Levin, Théo Duboule, and Martin Perret
Friday 11 July @ 19:00. | Ticket: R180 via Webtickets
In Motion represents a meeting of South African and Western European musical cultures. The project seeks to establish a creative dialogue between folkloric musics from Switzerland and South Africa, focusing on the period prior to and during the early stages of colonialism.
The result is a body of work that charts a wholly new artistic direction situated at the crossroads of multiple musical traditions. Levin is a guitarist, composer and lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand. After his initial music studies in Pretoria he graduated with a Master’s degree cum laude from the Amsterdam Conservatorium and was a semi- finalist at the Montreux Socar International Jazz Guitar competition in Switzerland.
Supported by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia
Line up:
Théo Duboule (guitar – CH), Vuma Levin (guitar), Matthias Spillmann (trumpet – CH), Marco Zenini (bass – IT) Martin Perret (drums – CH), Gontse Makhene (percussion).
Carlo & Sigi: The Gong Project
Saturday 12 July @ 19:30 | Tickets: R180 via Webtickets
The next day, the concert hall will be transformed into an acoustic wonderland for The Gong Project, featuring genre-defying bassist and composer Carlo Mombelli alongside acclaimed German percussionist Siegfried Kutterer. Supported by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, this project offers a one-of-a-kind sonic ritual where Eastern instrumentation meets avant-garde improvisation.
Carlo Mombelli is one of South Africa’s most inventive musicians. A long-time Wits professor and a global collaborator, his four-decade career spans jazz, classical, and experimental soundscapes. He has worked and recorded with legends including Egberto Gismonti, Lee Konitz, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Jorge Rossy, Charlie Mariano, Miriam Makeba, Mick Goodrick, continually pushing musical boundaries.
Joining him on stage are:
- Marcus Wyatt – one of South Africa’s most influential jazz trumpeters and composers.
- Sphelelo Mazibuko – a dynamic drummer bringing youthful fire and precision.
- Dennis Kühn, Fran Lorković, and Siegfried Kutterer – master percussionists with deep roots in European orchestras, experimental collectives, and sonic theatre. Having worked in the ensemble of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez.
Expect an evening of resonance, intuition, and unexpected beauty — music that literally moves the air.
Celebrate two musical milestones in one extraordinary venue.
