“At first people looked at us and said, you’re TV guys, what do you know about film,” Stevens recalls. “That made it even more important for us to prove we could deliver something at an international standard.”
And deliver they did. The team pushed for uncompromising quality — shooting on premium anamorphic lenses, building action sequences with Hollywood-level precision, and putting performance ahead of star power in the casting process.
“We didn’t care if it was the biggest name in South Africa or a new face,” Stevens says. “If you could deliver the performance, you had the role.”
The payoff is undeniable. From its sleek look to its global distribution deal, A Cop and a Half represents a new era for South African film. It is proof that local productions can stand shoulder to shoulder with international releases while still carrying the heart and humour of home.
