Legendary platinum-selling South African Afro House DJ, producer, and television personality Prince Kaybee has kicked off 2026 in style with a remix of ‘Time’ by San Franciscan alt-R&B duo Karmacoda, released on 13 February via Sola Musa Music. The striking remix has received support from acclaimed publication Music in Africa. From working club circuits, to winning South African DJ search competition 1’s and 2’s in 2015, his rise has been defined by grit and breakthrough moments. He has since collected multiple South African Music Awards (SAMAs), including Male Artist of the Year, Best Dance Album, and Album of the Year, alongside a Best Dance Album win at the Metro FM Music Awards and repeated Song of the Year honours at the DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards.
His international profile was cemented with a Best Collaboration win at the Soundcity MVP Awards Festival in Nigeria for his single ‘Gugulethu’, plus recognition from the African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA). With platinum-selling hits like ‘Club Controller’, ‘Banomoya’ and ‘Uwrongo’ – which was featured in TIME Magazine’s 10 Best Songs of 2020 – and standout collaborations with Lady Zamar, Busiswa, TNS, Shimza, Black Motion, and Ami Faku, Prince Kaybee continues to shape the sound of modern South African dance music.
Karmacoda is a genre-defying duo with a two-decade career spanning electronica, trip-hop, R&B, ballads, and dream pop. Known for blending soulful R&B with jazz lounge influences, they’ve gained recognition from publications like Electronic Groove which supported the remix of their hit ‘Dare’ by American producer E39, while his house remix of their track ‘Time Flies’ received support from House Music With Love, electronic duo KRONO’s remix of Karmacoda’s ‘Deja Vu’ received praise from Dancing Astronaut, and Oliver Schories’ melodic house remix of ‘Deja Vu’ premiered on YourEDM. Furthermore, Karmacoda have also received acclaim from CLASH Magazine, Wonderland Mag, and Earmilk, with airplay on NPR Music and RTÉ 2XM. The original track was lifted off their 2022 Lessons In Time LP. Featuring Jessica Ford (vocals), Brett Crockett (vocals/producer), and Eric Matsuno (bass/multi-instrumentalist). ‘Time’ touches on themes of regret and introspection. It features subtle, autotuned vocals, interwoven into a symphony of piano chords, a steady shaker and mesmerising melody.
Prince Kaybee adds his signature prodigal Afro House flair to the Karmacoda original. The South African producer extraordinaire injects the tender track with a super-charged, yet steady Afro House beat which forms the backbone of the remix, sure to ensnare fans of Sun-El Musician, Zakes Bantwini, and Black Coffee. The sublime piano arpeggios induce a striking emotional resonance, hypnotising the listener into a kaleidoscope of emotions from introspection to joy and even hints of melancholy.
Prince Kaybee told us: “When I make music I see color, so the vocals on the original remind me of blue and I usually associate blue with a mild cold or a subtle fresh breeze. So before I did the remix I needed to find its color that’s how it started.”
