The change in season is an exciting time on the KZN South Coast, with the cooler temperatures bringing the annual marine phenomenon – the Sardine Run! This annual spectacle is a treat for visitors to the region, making winter the ultimate getaway on the KZN South Coast.
Dr Ryan Daly, Marine Scientist at Oceanographic Research Institute, said they’re hoping for another good Sardine Run this year: “We have had relatively good runs over the past few years and I expect this coming year to be the same. The timing and size of the run can be influenced by so many factors – from sea temperature to sardine stock size and more – so it’s difficult to predict, but we will be monitoring the situation closely and keeping visitors updated on the progress.”
Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya, CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), says the tourism sector is ready to welcome the influx of visitors keen to experience the Sardine Run first-hand: “Our Blue Flag beaches and year-round subtropical climate means that, even in winter, the KZN South Coast is a great holiday getaway – and the Sardine Run makes it extra special. For first-time visitors, we wanted to share some of the reasons why this is not an event to be missed. Now’s the time to plan your Sardine Run getaway!”
1. It’s a world-famous phenomenon
The Sardine Run is known as ‘The Greatest Shoal on Earth’ because of the breathtaking vision of billions of silver sardines migrating along the coastline – attracting a feeding frenzy of predators, among them seabirds, sharks, dolphins, and whales. It’s been the feature of many internationally made wildlife documentaries, and is unlike any other migration across the planet.
